Intrusive Thoughts

Unwanted.

Unrelenting. Unwelcome...

Intrusive thoughts can be frightening, relentless and completely at odds with who you are. They often arrive without warning and present themselves as vivid “threats of consequence” involving catastrophe, harm, illness, loss of control or terrible consequences.

Intrusive thoughts typically begin by presenting a series of "What if...?" questions, each one designed to make you doubt yourself and anticipate catastrophic outcomes.

Eg.

What if I hurt someone or myself?
What if I lose control?
What if something terrible happens?
What if I make a catastrophic mistake?
What if I lose my mind?

Although these thoughts feel incredibly real and urgent, they are not intentions, predictions or facts. They are unwanted mental threats that become powerful when they are feared, analysed and treated as though they must mean something.

Why Do Intrusive Thoughts Feel So Real?

Almost everyone experiences strange or unwanted thoughts from time to time. The problem begins when those thoughts are interpreted as dangerous. Once this happens, many people become trapped in a cycle of analysing, suppressing, checking, seeking reassurance and avoiding situations that trigger anxiety. Ironically, the harder you try to get rid of the thoughts, the stronger and more persistent they become. It can leave you mentally exhausted, questioning your character, your judgement and even your own mind.

My Expertise

Intrusive thoughts are one of my main areas of expertise. Every year, I treat 500–600 people overcome unwanted thoughts, frightening mental images and persistent fears of catastrophic consequences. Many people arrive believing they'll never escape the cycle. Others are too ashamed to tell anyone what they're thinking. The reality is that intrusive thoughts are far more common than people realise, and with the right understanding and approach, they can absolutely be overcome. I don't teach people to cope with intrusive thoughts—I teach people how to take their power away, remove their significance and shut them down. Together, we'll understand why they're happening, identify what's keeping them alive and build practical strategies that stop them controlling your life.

Taking Ownership

An intrusive thought only becomes powerful when it is treated as a genuine threat that must be solved or prevented. My approach helps you move away from:

  • Constant Reassurance Seeking
  • Analysing and Examining Every Thought
  • Checking your Feelings and Behaviour
  • Avoiding Triggers
  • Searching for Certainty

Instead, you'll learn how to respond and behave differently, remove the fear attached to the thoughts and regain confidence in yourself.

Taking ownership doesn't mean liking the thoughts—it means refusing to let them dictate how you live your life.

Once you’ve worked with me you’ll very quickly realise that “You’re the “boss” of your thoughts, not they the “boss” of you!!

I honestly couldn’t recommend Duncan enough! I was recommended to Duncan at what was probably the worst point in my life. I was completely trapped by debilitating health anxiety, constantly convincing myself that things were wrong when they simply weren’t. I had reached a point where I couldn’t live a normal life as a 25-year-old. From the very beginning, Duncan made me feel completely understood. Whether it was at the end of a message, on the other side of a FaceTime call, or simply talking me through some of the most horrendous thoughts and feelings I had ever experienced, he was always there to listen, guide me and help me understand what was actually happening. Within just 1–2 weeks, I felt like a completely different person. I started getting my life back and, most importantly, I started to understand that I didn’t have to believe every thought my mind was throwing at me. I learned to challenge the “what ifs” rather than allowing them to control my life — and that change was incredible. I honestly can’t thank Duncan enough for the help, patience and guidance he gave me when I needed it most. He didn’t just help me get through an incredibly difficult period — he gave me the tools and confidence to move forward. Everyone needs a Duncan in their life! ❤️ And the best thing is, even now, I know that if I ever need him, he’s still there at the end of a message. If you’re struggling with anxiety and wondering whether to reach out for help, I genuinely couldn’t recommend Duncan highly enough. 5 stars doesn’t feel enough.

Duncan Spedding has been absolutely outstanding, and I genuinely can’t thank him enough for the support he has given me. He helped me through one of the most difficult periods of my life when I was struggling with depression, and his patience, understanding, and genuine compassion made a real and lasting difference. He always took the time to listen properly without any judgement, and helped me begin to see things from a healthier and more positive perspective when I felt completely overwhelmed. I always felt safe and comfortable speaking openly with him, and his support gave me the strength and confidence to start moving forward again. I would highly recommend Duncan to anyone going through a difficult time. He truly cares about the people he works with, and I am incredibly grateful for the positive impact he has had on my life.

I reached out to Duncan during one of the most anxious periods of my life. My anxiety had become overwhelming and I was constantly battling negative thoughts that felt completely out of control. After several weeks of struggling, I realised I needed specialist help. After searching online, I came across Duncan. Having read through his website and the many outstanding testimonials from previous clients, I decided to get in touch. True to his word, Duncan contacted me within 24 hours of completing the enquiry form and arranged an initial call. From that very first conversation, I knew I’d found the right person. Duncan immediately put me at ease. He listened carefully, was confident, professional, genuinely passionate about helping people, and refreshingly honest. One sentence from that first call has stayed with me ever since: “Matt, you will get better—and quickly—with the techniques I teach you.” That confidence gave me hope at a time when I really needed it. What I appreciated most was Duncan’s straightforward approach. There’s no jargon, no false promises and absolutely no fluff. He tells you exactly what you need to hear, explains anxiety in a way that finally makes sense and gives you practical techniques that genuinely work. I also found it incredibly reassuring that he openly shared some of his own life experiences, which made everything feel even more relatable. I committed to putting his techniques into practice and he was absolutely right. Before long, my negative thoughts were back under control, and I now have a completely different understanding of anxiety and more importantly, how to manage it. As Duncan often says, “I’m the boss!” That phrase has become something I remind myself regularly and it’s made a huge difference. If you’re struggling with anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or any mental challenges, I genuinely couldn’t recommend Duncan highly enough. His knowledge, passion, honesty and ability to help people regain control of their lives are second to none. Thank you, Duncan. You have made a lasting difference to my life.

Before reaching out to Duncan, I’d been struggling with my sleep for about a year. A friend recommended him and, if I’m honest, I was a little sceptical at first. But I was exhausted and willing to try anything. After I emailed him, Duncan got back to me almost immediately. We arranged an initial call soon afterwards, and he put me at ease straight away. Just hearing that I wasn’t the only person going through this made a huge difference and gave me hope. After my first session with Duncan, I genuinely felt like a different person. We had one more session together, and since then my sleep has improved so much—just ask my husband! More importantly, I now have the tools and confidence to manage things myself, which has completely changed the way I think about sleep. If you’re struggling with sleep and feel like nothing will help, please know that support really is out there. I can’t recommend Duncan highly enough. Getting in touch with him was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I honestly don’t think you’ll regret it.

I cannot recommend Duncan Spedding highly enough. After just one session with my 12-year-old daughter, who had been struggling with OCD, the difference was incredible. She came out of the session saying she felt like a “new human being,” which was something we never expected to hear so quickly. Before meeting with her, Duncan took the time to speak with me to understand her background and what she had been experiencing. He then spoke to my daughter beforehand, which helped put her at ease and meant she wasn’t nervous going into her first session. Duncan is kind, understanding, and incredibly skilled at what he does. The positive change we saw after just one appointment was remarkable, and we’re so grateful for his support. Thank you, Duncan.

My anxiety levels had increased over several months and when I was making excuses about riding my pony I knew I had to get help. I think I have read every book going, saw therapist after therapist, signed up to so may sites that said they could cure anxiety by listening to soothing music, hypnosis where I walked down cool marble stair case over a lush green lawn and my anxiety would simply disappear! Guess what I still stood at the side of my pony and thought what if this happens, what if that happens and thought no I’ll definitely ride tomorrow or maybe the day after etc. I really was at the end of my tether and whilst googling I came across Duncan’s website. I liked what he said and thought I would give it one last go made contact and arranged an appointment. I went along to see Duncan with quite frankly very low expectations. Duncan is very friendly and welcoming and his approach is completely different from anything else I had experienced he explained in layman’s terms what anxiety is and how it affects us, but most importantly how to deal with it. It just made sense and like a penny had dropped. I had found the missing link. I spent an hour listening and talking, asking questions and came away with a plan. On returning home I felt so good I brought my pony in from the field and rode him for the first time in a while. Whilst the what ifs still came flooding into my mind I dealt with them with positivity and carried on for 40 minutes or so just enjoying being back on my pony. Over the next weeks I practiced and practiced my new thought pattern and read and reread the email Duncan sent following our session recapping what anxiety is and how to deal with it I cannot thank Duncan enough and I would recommend him (and have done) to anyone who needs help.

After living with emetophobia for over 40 years, I had almost accepted that it would control my life forever. Every decision, every outing, every holiday, and many everyday situations were overshadowed by fear and anxiety. My phobia dictated what I did, where I went, and how I lived. I never imagined that such a profound change could come from just one session. From the moment I met Duncan, I felt understood, supported, and completely at ease. His expertise and approach helped me address a fear that had dominated my life for four decades. The results have been life-changing. I feel free in a way I haven't felt for years. Situations that once filled me with dread no longer have the same power over me, and I finally feel like I am living my life rather than managing my phobia. I am incredibly grateful and cannot recommend Duncan enough. If you are struggling with emetophobia, especially if you've suffered for many years as I did, don't lose hope. The right help can truly change your life.

“Duncan was a life saver.” After an incredibly stressful Year 10, mock‑exam pressure, and a broken wrist, my daughter developed severe anxiety and crippling insomnia. Despite trying to get help through our GP and BUPA, nothing made a difference. A family friend then recommended Duncan, who had helped her own son — and from the very first session, everything changed. Before meeting Duncan, my daughter couldn’t fall asleep until 6.30am despite going to bed at 9pm. We tried medicines, gummies, supplements — nothing worked. The exhaustion and frustration would build until she was in tears, lashing out, and completely drained for school the next day. Duncan immediately put her at ease. He gave her a clear, supportive process that helped her understand her anxiety and regain control. It felt like having my real, kind, smiling daughter back again. Her anxiety — even in stressful school situations — has disappeared. Her confidence has returned. The insomnia that once ruled her life is now completely gone. And her school grades are finally reflecting the remarkable turnaround we’ve seen. I can honestly say that Duncan’s support has transformed her life. He didn’t just help — he gave us our daughter back.

I first started working with Duncan when I was 14 years old and on the verge of turning down a scholarship at a professional football club, because my performance anxiety and nerves had become overwhelming. Working with Duncan was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and genuinely changed the course of my life and career. Rather than trying to eliminate my nerves completely, he helped me develop a completely new perspective and taught me how to manage and channel them in a far more effective way. The transformation was incredible. I continued playing at a high level, but with greater confidence, control, and belief in myself. The skills and mindset Duncan helped me develop have stayed with me ever since and have benefited me both on and off the pitch. If you’re struggling with anxiety, confidence, performance pressure, or any challenge that’s holding you back in life, I couldn’t recommend Duncan highly enough. His support, insight, and guidance can be truly life-changing.
